Sereina Capatt

Co-Director

How does Switzerland position itself on complex foreign policy challenges such as the war in Ukraine or climate change? Sereina Capatt has addressed these and other questions during her professional experiences at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London, as well as at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and in the foreign editorial department of NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). With a focus on sustainability, development cooperation, and Eastern Europe, she strives to connect individuals and organizations in order to tackle these challenges together.

Sereina studied International Relations at the University of Geneva and Aarhus, as well as Eastern European Studies and Political Science at the University of Bern. In June 2023, she started her new position as co-director of foraus.

Switzerland’s foreign policy is being reshaped by geopolitical fragmentation, fiscal pressure, militarisation, technological disruption, and climate crisis. At the same time, progress on gender equality is facing growing pushback. This publication argues that gender backlash is not a marginal issue, but a structural trend. It also argues that gender equality is not a symbolic add-on, but a condition for a credible and effective foreign policy.
