Dorotea Avedisian

Co-Head Basel

Dorotea Avedisian studied Law at the University of Basel, specialising in International Law. She is currently a lecturer and PhD candidate in International Criminal Law. Her research focuses on military applications of AI and the normative challenges surrounding the criminal liability of programmers and manufacturers of autonomous weapon systems.

Alongside her academic work, Dorotea has gained multilateral and diplomatic experience at the Swiss Embassy in the Netherlands and currently at the Directorate of International Law within the FDFA. In parallel projects, she examines the domestic impact of digital transformation including the practical and normative implications of AI for the administration of criminal justice in Switzerland.

Professionally and academically, she works at the intersection of new technologies, digitalisation, defence policy and international law. As co-regional director of foraus Basel (since january 2026), she is particularly interested in how technological innovations are fundamentally reshaping global power dynamics, state responsibility and the modalities of a rules-based international order – and how Switzerland can actively help shape these debates.
