✨ This October, our eyes are geared towards the second session of the International Dialogue on Migration hence why we decided to explore this theme. During the last few years, scholars have been reporting on worrying trends in the field of migration such as the criminalization, dehumanization , and stigmatization of migrants, as well as the increasing privatization of the actors involved. Moreover, recently, we were all able to witness the violence that sub-saharan African migrants are facing in North Africa. What is the current situation in 2023 and what can Switzerland do? Join us to hear Elodie Gerber’s take on the matter.
🏆Elodie currently works for the Canton of Geneva as an adult protection worker. Until October 2022, she was asylum seekers advisor within the legal protection unit of Caritas Switzerland. Passionate about the Middle East region, Elodie worked in Lebanon for the NGO Nabad, which promotes better living conditions for Syrian refugees. She is currently Co-Head of the Migration programme at foraus.

South Korea is now internationally known as a cultural powerhouse and attracts increasing numbers of visitors.
Kimberly Schlegel and Mélanie Poy will explore South Korea’s export of cultural products and how technology has supported its global success As part of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) phenomenon, one of these successful exports are digital comics called «webtoons».
Using these South Korean comics as an example, Kimberly will explain enabling influence of sophisticated mobile technology and the interplay between different Hallyu products. Mélanie will then share her observations on how the South Korean tourism industry markets the country in relation to the Hallyu phenomenon.
After a brief comparison with Swiss exports and Switzerlands image abroad, the speakers will invite the audience to reflect on what lies behind a country's image in an open discussion.
Mélanie Poystarted listening to K-pop and watching K-dramas when she was a teenager.
During her Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, she spent a year as an exchange student in South Korea. After this experience, she decided to deepen her understanding with a Master in Asian Studies at the University of Geneva. During her Master's studies, she spent one semester each in Tokyo and Seoul. Mélanie's master's thesis examines how the South Korean tourism organisation organisation portrays its country online, in the context of the international success of the Korean Wave.
Kimberly Schlegel studied English and Japanese at the University of Zurich and spent an exchange year at Keio University in Tokyo in 2017/18. After falling in love with Japanese
manga in her teens, the same happened again in 2017 with South Korean webtoons. As part of the Asia Society Switzerland's Generation Asia programme, Kimberly gave a TED-style talk on the global spread of webtoons at the STATE OF ASIA conference in 2022. When she's not reading comics, you can find her swimming in the nearest lake or making kombucha.
Mit unserem Projekt «Bildung ohne Grenzen» möchten wir eine von jungen Menschen geführte nationale Debatte über die Zukunft der Schweizerischen Bildungsaussenpolitik lancieren und innovative Lösungsansätze entwickeln, wie eine für unser Land optimale Bildungsmobilität funktionieren kann.
Denn obwohl unser Land mit einem Fachkräftemangel konfrontiert ist (#Fachkräftemangel), wurde es 2014 auch von Erasmus+, dem Flaggschiffprogramm für Bildungsmobilität der Europäischen Union (EU) ausgeschlossen, trotz der Tatsache, dass der Bildungsaustausch die Schweiz als Ganzes in Bezug auf Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, Innovation und internationale Integration stärkt. Dies wurde so auch erst vor Kurzem von Bund und Kantonen in ihrer Strategie für Austausch und Mobilität zum Ausdruck gebracht.
Da sich die die Schweiz gegenwärtig noch immer in einer schwierigen politischen Lage gegenüber der EU befindet, fragen wir uns:
Welche Bildungsaussenpolitik soll die Schweiz verfolgen, um die Qualifikationen, Skills und Kompetenzen junger Menschen zu sichern, damit unser Land auch in Zukunft erfolgreich sein wird?
In unserem Workshop in Zürich, der am Donnerstag, 2. November stattfinden wird, werden wir uns mit der Frage auf die Spur gehen, ob die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ausland den Bildungsstandort Schweiz attraktiv(er) macht.
Unsere Hochschulen gehören zu den besten der Welt - tausende Studierende aus dem Ausland ziehen Jahr für Jahr in die Schweiz, um hier zu studieren. Doch was macht den Schweizer Bildungsstandort so attraktiv? Welche Faktoren und Indikatoren spielen eine Rolle für den guten Ruf der Schweizer Hochschulen. Und vielleicht noch viel wichtiger: Wie können wir gemeinsam mit dem Ausland gewährleisten, dass wir auch den Studierenden von morgen eine exzellente Bildung versprechen können?
Diese und viele weitere Fragen werden wir am 2. November diskutieren - und wir freuen uns bereits, wenn Du mit von der Partie bist!
Zu Beginn des Workshops wird eine:r unserer Expert:innen ein einleitendes Inputreferat halten, danach laden wir Euch, ein das Thema in kleineren Diskussionsgruppen aus mehreren Perspektiven zu beleuchten. 💬

Wenn vom «Pazifik» die Rede ist, geht es meist um China, Australien, Japan oder die USA. Der Pazifik selbst mit seinen unzähligen Inseln, Kulturen und gelebten Erfahrungen wird gerne überflogen. Entsprechend erstaunt war die Öffentlichkeit, als die Schweiz im vergangenen August diplomatische Beziehungen mit Niue aufnahm, einem Inselstaat mit gerade mal 1700 Einwohnern. Doch dieser taktische Entscheid widerspiegelt eine generelle Hinwendung zum Ozean im geopolitischen Umbruch, die inzwischen auch europäische Binnenländer erfasst.
Chinas Streben in den Pazifik weckt Ängste bei den etablierten Mächten. Andererseits verleiht der Wandel den oft vernachlässigten Gemeinschaften Ozeaniens eine neue Relevanz. Wird das Ringen um Einfluss alte koloniale Muster reproduzieren oder könnte es kleinen Inselstaaten zu einer neuen Stimme auf der Weltbühne verhelfen?
Dieser Vortrag rollt die Geschichte des Pazifiks als transkolonialen Raum auf und beleuchtet, wie historische Erinnerung die Politik der Gegenwart prägt. In gemeinsamen Diskussionen tasten wir uns an Szenarien für die Region heran, ausgehend von ihren heterogenen Erfahrungen mit Machtverschiebungen seit dem 19.
Welche Risiken birgt der Blick aus Europa und inwiefern erfordert die Zusammenarbeit in der Region eine ausgeprägte historische Sensibilität?
Und wie positioniert sich die Schweiz zwischen humanitärem Engagement und kolonialem Erbe?

Nous pourrons compter sur la participation notamment d’Isabelle Moret, conseillère d’Etat vaudoise, de Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Ambassadeur d’Italie en Suisse et de Pierre-Yves Maillard, Président de l’Union Syndicale Suisse. Le programme complet sera communiqué dans la seconde moitié d’octobre. Cette année, le séminaire se concentre sur les aspects suivants : I. Enjeux économiques : Quels défis pour la politique économique suisse dans un monde globalisé et marqué par une course au développement technologique ? Quelles priorités pour les relations avec l’Union européenne ? II. Enjeux sociaux : Quels sont les besoins d’intégration économique et quelles sont les conséquences pour le marché du travail ? Quel besoin et quelle forme pour les mesures d'accompagnement ? III. Enjeux politiques : quel avenir pour la voie bilatérale Suisse-UE dans cette nouvelle configuration socioéconomique ? Our workshop, "Navigating Demographic Shifts: Strengthening Health Systems," is a comprehensive dive into the strategies, policies, and innovations that can help health systems adapt and thrive in the face of changing demographics. This workshop brings together experts, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to collaboratively explore solutions to this critical issue.
Our event will start with a presentation by Angélie Pham Team Lead of the Digital Health / AI & Biocampus at the Innovation Office from the University of Basel and then we'll invite you to take part in a series of collaborative brainstorming sessions and group discussions.
Key Workshop Topics:
1. Understanding Demographic Changes: We will delve into the latest demographic trends, including population aging, urbanization, and migration, and their implications for healthcare resources.
2. Innovative Technologies and resource allocation: Explore how technology, such as telemedicine, AI-driven diagnostics, and digital health records, can enhance healthcare delivery and effective resource allocation.
3. Policy Frameworks: Analyze existing policies and propose new ones that can ensure equitable access to healthcare services across different demographic groups.
In this workshop, we will use the Policy Kitchen by foraus to upload our ideas and stay connected after the workshop. Don't forget to bring your laptop!
